On Saturday night, boxing fans finally got what they had been referring to as "The Fight of the Century". Tickets sold out in 60 seconds. StubHub reported that some schmuck paid $40k for one goddamn ticket. Other tickets were being priced on the secondary market for over $300k, none of which were bought. Ticket brokers were scrambling to sell tickets that had been purchased in bulk, many of which weren't sold and brokers taking gigantic losses. Then came the actual fight.

To be fair, a lot of the viewers for #MayPac weren't your hardcore boxing fans; very casual fans bought up a lot of the hype and wanted to be part of history. Sports fans of my generation reflected back on the knockout power of Mike Tyson and the flashiness of Roy Jones Jr. making people look silly, only to see them staring up from the canvas. Anyone who even slightly knew Floyd Mayweather's style of boxing, knew that this fight would be far removed from a '90's style heavyweight knockout.

Mayweather hasn't had a KO since 2008 (Ortiz doesn't count) and Pacquiao '09. The odds of them winning by KO were very low, but alas, fans gathered around their TV sets paying $100 or packing into a sweaty watering hole to witness what they thought would be the best fight of the last 100 years. As cited by any media outlet, the unanimous decision just didn't pan out.

Shortly after the fight, the official UFC Instagram page (featured above) posted a picture captioned "Mark your calendar now. May 23rd, we'll bring the real action. #UFC187" clearly referencing the overall bored attitude of fans from Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. MMA fans outpoured on Twitter and Reddit of how this would be the end of boxing, and if you are bored of boxing to 'come watch MMA'.

The UFC also posted this video with the caption "When you attempt to hug in the Octagon... #justsayin" again, clearly poking fun at the many times in MayPac where the fighters were tangled up and had to be separated by the referee.

Overall, #MayPac is turning out to be great for MMA and specifically the UFC. Fight fans are angry about how much they spent, and angry that they didn't see the action that they wanted. It will be very interesting to see how the UFC takes advantage of what could be a huge transition of combat sports fans that were left feeling unsatisfied. I think this Reddit user said it best:
