It's Frontpage Friday

Alvez Weighs in at 170.5 pounds...or did he?

Yesterday, I brought some attention to the fact that Thiago Alves "cheats" the weight classes, and that he really should be either a MW or even a LHW, depending on what his natural walking weight is. Well it didn't take long to figure that out, as Thiago's nutritionist Mike Dolce of The Dolce diet tweeted photos of Thiago weighing nearly 200 pounds just hours after weighing in. How is that even possible? Did he eat an entire pig and wash it down with a gallon of milk? I can't even grasp my brain around how a person can gain 30 pounds in 3 hours. If there was ever an example proving my point of how irrelevant weight classes are, this is it. There needs to be weigh-ins on the day of the fight, or the walking weights of each fighter needs to be taken. If the NSAC doesn't change these rules, the weight gains/losses will only get more ridiculous, until somebody finally pushes their body too hard, or gets knocked out by someone who weighs 50 pounds more than them. I don't know how much Martin Kampmann will weigh for tonight's fight (probably around 175-180) but Alves will be close to 205, maybe more. In the end, Alves' power will be too much for Martin tonight, and some might think it's unfair.

Flyweight Tournament Begins Tonight

Tonight starts the first fights of a new UFC weight class, the Flyweights (125 pounds). Two guys who added together don't even come within 10 pounds of one Brock Lesnar will face off in a 4 man bracket style tournament to determine the first champ. At first, I wasn't crazy about this weight class, but I've come to realize that it's all about putting on good fights. The speed of these guys should be incredible, and the energy just as good. The only problem I'd have with this weight class brings up the topic of unnatural weight cuts again. The Bantamweight and Featherweight classes are already light as it is, and if a fighter can't compete there, he will most likely try some crazy diet coughDolceDietahemm so that he can try and win some fights at 125 pounds and avoid being cut. If it's open for abuse, then fighters will most likely abuse it. (Pictured: FlW Demetrious Johnson, HW Stefen Struve)
